4 Tips to Help Protect Your Home While You're on Vacation
Make sure your home will be protected from water or mold damages before leaving for an extended vacation. Follow our tips listed below:
#1- Check the batteries in your home security devices, including motion detectors, cameras, and smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Replace them if necessary.
#2- Conserve energy. Switch your water heater to the pre-programmed vacation mode or turn it completely off. Also, set your thermostat either four degrees below or above your normal temperature. For summer months, set your thermostat in the upper 70's. For winter months, set your thermostat in the upper 50's.
#3- Prevent a power surge or even a fire by unplugging your electronics or making sure they are plugged into a surge protector.
#4- Shut off the main water supply to your home. Often times a homeowner will call us upon returning from vacation because they have learned a broken pipe or malfunctioning appliance has caused water damage. If you would like to leave the water on for an automatic sprinkler system, then at least turn off the water supply lines to the dishwasher, ice-maker on the refrigerator, and every toilet. You may think this is an uncommon event, but trust me, this happens all too often.
